A large town and coastal resort in Dorset, England, Weymouth has a population of over 50,000 which rises during the summer months as thousands of visitors arrive for their summer holidays.
A former fishing town, Weymouth these days relies mostly on tourism for its economic survival. Weymouth appears to have developed since the 12th century, though the first mention of the town was in the 13th century, by the end of which it had become a significant seaport.
One of the earliest established seaside resorts in England, Weymouth's tourist industry began in the late 18th century when George III used it as his summer residence. Weymouth's tourist industry reached its peak during the 1960's to 1990's, after which it has declined due to the growing trend to take overseas holidays.
Weymouth has rail links with London Waterloo and with Bristol, it can be reached by road via the A354 from Dorchester, it is also a ferry port with ferry links to Guernsey, St Helier and Saint-Malo.
