A bustling town and coastal resort on the coast of East Sussex, Hastings has a reasonable selection of hotels, guest houses and bed and breakfast establishments, though numbers have decreased in recent years. World famous as the site of the "Battle of Hastings" (which actually took place some 8 miles north of the town at Senlac Hill), Hastings was formerly an important mining area during Roman times. This cosmopolitan town boasts the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe and has a proud heritage in the fishing industry of the area.
Among the most popular local attractions are Hastings Castle, strategically build on a promontory above the town, the ruins of which can still be admired today, it was one of the first castles built by the Norman King William the Conquerer in 1067. Other popular attractions are the Blue Reef Aquarium, where visitors can view an incredible variety of sea creatures, the Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves, the Fishermen's Museum, Hastings Fishmarket, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, the Old Town Museum and the Shipwreck Heritage Centre.
