Exeter, the county town of Devon, is actually a city of some 122,000 inhabitants, it has a municipal area of 18.2 square miles, and is located about 70 miles south-west of Bristol. These days a busy commercial city, Exeter has a long and rich past stretching back into pre-history. Possibly of Celtic origin, Exeter was known as Isca Dumnoniorium in Roman times, and was their most south-westerly fortified city in Britain. The location of many sieges and battles over the centuries, due to its strategic location on the River Exe, Exeter's castle was build during the reign of William the Conqueror. Part's of Exeter's Roman walls still remain today, as do a significant Roman Baths complex unearthed in the 1970's. Places to visit in Exeter include the cathedral, founded in 1050, the ruined Rougemont Castle, the Guild Hall and the Saint Nicholas Priory (now a museum).
Exeter can be reached by road, rail and air, its road links include the M5 and the A30, its rail links connect to London Waterloo, London Paddington, the Midlands and Scotland, and its International Airport connects the city with the rest of the world.
