A major port and the largest city in Hampshire, England, Southampton has a population of around 230,000, and a history which goes back to the Stone Age. One of the Uk's primary ports it bade farewell to the ill fated RMS Titanic on its first and last voyage in 1812. The settlement which became Southampton was originally called Porth Hamon, the later Roman settlement was named Clausentum and the Anglo-Saxon version was known as Hamwic, then Hamtun, then Hampton, it fell into decline in the 9th century due to Viking attacks, but was fortified and strengthened during the 10th century and developed into a significant port. Southampton became a Spa town during the 18th century, and many came to bathe in the sea waters. The docks were further developed in the Victorian era, and the arrival of the railway fuelled additional growth.
Southampton has excellent transport links, the A3 connects the city with London, the M27 runs north of the city, the railway connects it to London, the Midlands and the West Country, the ferry port links it with Cowes on the Isle of Wight and its airport links it Internationally.
