Margate - Kent:

Located in the Thanet district of eastern Kent, the popular seaside resort of Margate was first recorded as Meregate in 1264, the earliest mention of the modern name "Margate" was in 1299 though the name appears to have varied over the centuries. The name is thought to originate from a gap (or gate) in the cliffs, where pools of water gathered.

Margate has a long maritime tradition and was once a limb of Dover, one of the original Cinque Ports of Kent and Sussex.

For over 250 years, Margate has been one of the United Kingdoms main seaside resorts, having particular appeal to holidaymakers and day-trippers from London. It is said to be the first resort to introduce deck chairs and bathing machines in around 1898, the main draw was of course the fine sandy beaches and later the huge Dreamland amusement park which has now largely been destroyed in 2 separate fires.

Margate's fine Victorian pier was destroyed by a storm in 1978.

Modern day Margate has a population of about 57,000, it still attracts holidaymakers and families to its excellent beach which has donkey rides, bouncy castles and a boating pool. Worth a visit is the old town and the market place.
